Air - 空気 -
Inaudible yet perceptible
This pair formed part of my final MA submissions. My pursuit of expressing time as layers of moments and evoking the sense of transience through painting is ongoing. And with this pair, the source of inspiration was, once again, nature.
Repeated shapes and quiet spaces coexist in nature and create a fine balance between rhythm and pause. With these paintings, I incorporated both repetitive shapes and lines (rhythms) and quieter spaces excluding them (pauses).
Illusionary distance
These three small paintings are the only pieces I completed in the studio overlooking Aberystwyth with the backdrop of Cardigan Bay. Compared to my previous studio which was right on the sea edge the feel of distance was much keener.
Hide and seek
You always notice something new in the woods, whether looking up or down, or straight ahead through the trees. My mind wonders in all directions - root networks, the leaves hanging from branches, mist decending. Sometimes, the woods seem so calm and inviting, but at other times, they look utterly foreboding. Whatever the mood, the overwhelming feeling is that everything is connected on a molecular level even if the connection is invisible to the human eye.
