Junko Burton is an abstract artist who draws inspiration from transience in nature. She uses a wide range of materials and formats while pursuing the challenge of expressing nature’s fragility and ephemerality.
The first half of her life so far, she lived in central Tokyo. For the latter half, she has been in numerous, mostly rural, areas across England and Wales. Despite the background, her artistic training and education have focused almost entirely on Western art. Although Japanese aesthetics have manifested itself in her artworks it wasn’t until recent when she began actively embracing her cultural background and exploring traditional Japanese art materials and techniques.
Her subject matter does not change often. For the last few years, the main focus was to watch the movements while looking down into water and express them as layers of time. The process often involves literal layering of mediums or meticulous preparations, which underpins her belief that a journey holds as much importance as the destination.
