I paint mostly with acrylic on board but have occasionally worked with natural pigment on paper. For the last few years, I have been focusing on expressing elusive shifts in nature.
My process begins with observing the lapse of time found in nature. What inspires me could be something I need to stare at for a while in order to capture it, or something that changes so fast that I need additional help of multiple images. Occasionally, what catches my eye is the evidence of time passed, that has elapsed over a long period.
The way I paint in layers reflects how I see time - the layers of moments. It tends to be a slow process but is underpinned by my belief that a journey holds as much importance as the destination. Making art to me is a very personal journey.
I am originally from Tokyo but have lived in the UK for over 30 years, mostly in a rural environment. Despite the fact I have never acquired traditional Japanese art forms or pursued ‘Japanese’ expressions, Japanese aesthetics often manifest itself in my artworks.
